5. Abstract: In this presentation, we demonstrate how tools from statistical physics and nonlinear dynamics can be applied to the study of brain dynamics. We show the applications of the nonlinear time series analysis in explaining the brain wave patterns observed from electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocorticography (ECoG), especially the directionality patterns from the phase of the brain waves across the cortex. Also, we give various applications of general coupled oscillator models, such as Kuramoto and Stuart-Landau models, in the understanding of collective dynamics of the whole brain network. We begin with how the oscillator models elucidate the relationship between global topology, local dynamics, and directionality in the brain network. The hysteresis in the brain network during the conscious-to-unconscious state transition is presented as a further example of which the model applications have been successful. Finally, inspired by the models, we end with the idea of the internal/external state transitions as a means of how the brain interacts with the external world.
